Existing Oak Hill Standpipe
Built in 1912, the existing steel tank has a capacity of 300,000 gallons. Given the growth in the community, a new tank was needed. Construction of a 1.8 million gallon concrete tank began in August. The tank is being built by the Natgun Corporation, a company specializing in the construction of such tanks.
A look inside the new tank
First the floor is poured and then scaffolding is set up inside the tank. Walls are then cast on site and put into place. Once the walls and dome roof are constructed, the scaffolding is taken down.
Spraying on the shotcrete
A coating of shotcrete is applied to the outside of the tank to prevent corrosion.
Closeup of the crews winding the wire around the tank
To ensure the strength of the tank, wire is wound around it at predetermined intervals. After the wire is installed around the outside of the tank, a final layer of shotcrete will be sprayed on the tank which will provide an additional layer of permanent corrosion protection.
New Oak Hill Tank
The new 1.8 million gallon concrete tank was completed in the winter of 2001.
