The Littleton Water Department is working with the Town of Boxborough on a project to provide safe, reliable drinking water.
Construction Update
Updated February 13th, 2025
Connecting New Well to Treatment Plant
Installation of a new main, to transport water from the new Trumbull Well on Taylor Street to the Whitcomb Avenue Water Treatment Plant started the week of January 6, 2025.
Work began on Whitcomb Avenue, at the Taylor Street intersection, and will proceed in a southerly direction toward the Route 2 overpass. There, the main will turn off-road and run adjacent to Route 2 East. While the road is trenched, a new, finished water main will also be installed to replace the existing main serving Whitcomb Ave. properties.
The work crew is expected to pass the Porter Road intersection, heading southwest on Whitcomb Avenue, in late February. At that point, through traffic on Whitcomb Avenue will be detoured through Harvard onto Littleton County Road to Old Schoolhouse Road, to Old Littleton Road, and back into Littleton on Oak Hill Road, to reach King and Taylor streets. This weekday detour is expected to remain in place until late April, as crews will also be on Littleton County Road in Harvard installing water main to Beaver Brook Road in Boxborough.

Expect roadwork Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. Expect rough road surfaces with metal plates or exposed gravel surfaces. Trenches are scheduled to be paved weekly.
Connection to Boxborough
Set for mid-March, crews will resume the installation of water main from Whitcomb Avenue at the town line, heading south on Little County Road in Harvard, then turning onto Beaver Brook Road. This work will require the same weekday detour as outlined above. Littleton County Road northbound traffic will be detoured onto Old Schoolhouse Road, to Old Littleton Road, to Oak Hill Road in Littleton to reach King and Taylor streets.
The detour is expected to last until late April or when the work turns onto Beaver Brook Road, where it will continue onto Swanson Road and end on Codman Hill Road. The project is set to be completed by Fall 2026.
Expect roadwork Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. Expect rough road surfaces with metal plates or exposed gravel surfaces. Trenches are scheduled to be paved weekly.
Detours
LELWD has worked closely with the Police Departments from Littleton and Harvard to implement a traffic plan that minimizes the inconvenience to residents and commuters in this area, while maximizing the efficiency of work on the project.
Local passenger and school bus traffic will be allowed through as needed. Local traffic should stop and ask the detail officer for assistance in safely passing the work zone. Once work on Whitcomb Avenue passes southwest of Porter Road, thru traffic should expect to be detoured along Littleton County Road in Harvard, Old Schoolhouse Road, Old Littleton Road, and Oak Hill Road in Littleton, leading to King and Taylor streets. This detour will be in place while crews install water main from Porter Road on Whitcomb Avenue to Beaver Brook Road on Littleton County Road in Harvard.

Service Disruptions:
Construction crews will be swapping customers’ water service lines from the old water main to the new water main within the sewer district. This will require a brief, one-time water shutoff for each impacted property during overnight hours between late Sept – November 30 and possibly later until work ceases for the winter. Read More
